Concerning bad attitudes towards one's school work

"But why do we have to read these boring books ALL THE TIME? Why can't we go outside and play? Why do we have to study? Why do we have to be ed-" Leo stopped to think of the word, "Edua-" No, that wasn't how it was supposed to sound. "Edacu?" Not that either.
"Educated." Liam helped.
"Yes. Edutaced."
"Precisely." Liam looked up from the novel he was engrossed in. "You have answered your own question." He walked a few paces away with his nose buried in the book again.
Leo made a frustrated scowl at the text he was supposed to be studying. "What do you mean? You aren't making any sense at all."
"You, oh small one, are showing your own ignorance by attempting to use a vocabulary much to large for your little mouth."
"But if everything I am trying to learn is too big for me, then why should I try to be learning it at all?"
"You will grow into in shortly. The harder you try, the more likely it is that you will understand it." Liam sat down in a comfortable chair and set Leo on his knee. "The worst fate is to go your whole life without a grain of knowledge. If you live out all your days in recklessness and idiocy, then that is all you will gain, and it is more than likely that you will lose anything you might have." Liam's face became gravely serious. "But, if you strive for higher goals, if you expect greater achievements out of yourself, then you have the capability of attaining the world."
Leo frowned. Liam's explanations hardly ever made any sense to him. "I just want to play. I need to get out of this dusty old library."
Liam nodded in complete understanding. "All good things to those who wait. You must be patient and study for now. Perhaps later we will go out for some air."
"Promise?"
Liam smiled and tussled the anxious little boy's pretty golden curls. "Do you solemnly swear to diligently undertake all tasks hereby assigned to you concerning your studies?"
Leo swore.
"Good. I'll help you read to make it go by faster."
